Wedding cake wonders: What to consider when choosing your cake

1656

Planning a wedding can often be a stressful occurrence, because as a bride, you want everything to be just perfect. With that in mind, we chatted to Granny Mouse Country House & Spa Pastry Chef, Leon de Kock, to find out just what advice he gives to brides when it comes to choosing the perfect cake for their special day.

De Kock commented that, “Wedding cakes are such a passion for me, as they represent one of the celebrated formal moments that cement you as husband and wife, and for obvious reasons, you want the cake to be just perfect. There are however some fundamental elements that you need to consider when making your wedding cake decisions.”

Here are Chef de Kock’s 5 top tips for choosing your cake.

1. It’s up to the bride! Don’t let other people tell you what you want. It is your day, and if you want a particular style, flavour or design, then you can have it. There are no taboos when it comes to choosing a wedding cake type or style.

2. Always meet with the Chef yourself. You wouldn’t send someone else to choose your wedding dress, so why send someone else to meet with the Chef? It is important that the bride meets with the Chef, as he will discuss texture, flavour and decorations with you personally; so don’t just send an email.

3. What’s the climate? The location of your chosen venue and the venues general climate will affect your cake choices. If you select a generally warm venue, then your cake may have to be kept cool in a refrigerator, which is not suitable for some finishes. Butter cream cakes can be refrigerated, but if you’re using any plastic icing, refrigeration becomes problematic!

4. Compliment your menu. Review the menu that you have chosen for your guests, and allow your cake to provide different flavors to that menu. You want it to compliment the other courses on the menu.

5. Be prepared to pay a premium. This is not just an ordinary cake, so expect to pay a premium for your wedding cake, as they take time to make and often have very intricate details. If it seems too cheap, its probably going to look cheap!
